OUR AMBITIONS

Our ambition for the second half of Queen’s Island’s development is to double down on sustainability and our development ambitions. More than doubling our current economic and social value contribution whilst reducing vehicle carbon emissions and to ensure levels are retained at current (2021) levels or below.

Now in 2021…

• We have pioneered sustainable development in Belfast, with 500,000 sq. ft of our developments accredited BREAAM excellent or LEED Gold.

• One of the most successful ‘Belfast Bike’ hire schemes, and the introduction of a Glider Bus Rapid Transit system has encouraged more people to use public transport, reducing emissions and congestion.

• Overall 10% reduction in traffic has been achieved at Queen’s Island between 2016 and 2019.

By 2035…

• Projected new traffic at Queen’s Island will be reduced by 30%, helping maintain carbon emissions at, or below, current levels.

• UK Government commitments to ban new petrol and diesel car sales from 2030, will further reductions in emissions.

• As a minimum, based on current policies, car emissions are projected to fall by 52% by 2050, and will accelerate if UK Government “Road to Net Zero Strategy” and Belfast “Net Zero Carbon Roadmap” policies are delivered.

SOCIAL VALUE IMPACT

Our comprehensive transport assessment will set how we continue to encourage modal shifts and reduce car use. By introducing more active travel alternatives for Queen’s Island employees, visitors and residents, we will support the health and well-being of all users.

Development enabled by the Strategic Transport Masterplan will facilitate growth of a number of social value commitments on Queen’s Island.

£104 million of social value is currently being generated through work, health and wellbeing, apprenticeships and volunteering.

1,000 residents living in high quality, healthy housing at Queen’s Island
